Scanning Skills
On your journeys through this course practice your scanning skills but do keep the following points in mind. This will help you with your hazard perception skills development:
- To develop scanning and prioritisation skills it's important to avoid comparing clips to one another. A vehicle emerging from a junction in one scene may not be the most important thing to deal with in another scene. This is exactly the case in real life situations.
- The course has been prepared from substantial experience of teaching drivers and motorcyclists. This experience is used in the identification of potential and actual hazards. During the clip reviews you will be able to see how well your scanning skills compared to those of the instructors.
- The course is about personal development and not about expecting perfection. Although we may all strive for it, none of us can be perfect in driving or riding unfortunately.
- Using it as guided will bring about a significant development of your scanning skills, your perception of hazards and your concentration. These are three of the most important components of good and responsible driving or riding.
- In real life we would benefit from our peripheral vision to assist in the assessment of some hazards. We would also be able to turn our heads at any given time to monitor situations and check for various risks.
- The course material is filmed from a car (with some filmed from a motorcycle). The camera is unable to capture the peripheral vision and head movements that would sometimes assist us with scanning. This is the same as the national Hazard Perception Test.
